Pine straw, pollen, and why gutters matter more here
Gutters are the least interesting thing on a house right up until they stop working. In the CSRA they stop working faster than in most places, for three reasons that are specific to this area.
Pine needles. Leaves float and eventually wash through. Pine straw mats together into a dense plug that holds water in the gutter and against the fascia. Anyone with pines over the house knows what the inside of their gutters looks like in November.
Pollen. Every spring the yellow layer that coats everything in Augusta and Aiken also goes into the gutters, where it mixes with grit washed off the shingles and turns into a sludge that sets like cement.
Our rain comes all at once. A summer thunderstorm here can drop more water in twenty minutes than a whole day of gentle rain elsewhere. Undersized gutters do not gradually underperform, they overflow, and the water lands at the foundation. On the clay soils common in this region that is exactly where you do not want it.
Seamless, and why size matters more than people think
Sectional gutter from a big box store comes in lengths that get joined together, and every joint is a future leak. Seamless gutter is formed on site from a continuous coil to the exact length of your run, so the only seams are at the corners and the outlets.
The bigger decision is size. Standard residential gutter is 5 inch with 2 by 3 inch downspouts. Stepping up to 6 inch with 3 by 4 inch downspouts moves substantially more water and clogs far less readily, because a pine needle that bridges a 2 by 3 outlet passes straight through a 3 by 4.
It is worth the difference on steep roofs, on large roof areas draining to a short run of gutter, and on any house under heavy tree cover. Given the CSRA housing stock, that is a lot of houses. We will tell you when 5 inch is genuinely fine, because often it is.
Where the water goes once it leaves the downspout matters as much as the gutter itself. Dumping it two feet from the wall solves nothing. Extensions or buried drainage that carries it well away from the foundation is the part that actually protects the house.
